1 There are now two types of fire alarm sound: Continuous and loud - Leave the building via the nearest exit immediately. Pulsating – event though you are not required to leave the building, feel free to. Pulsating tone alerts us to the fact that the fire alarm has gone off in one of the nearby campus buildings. We will always endeavor to determine the cause of the alarm as soon as possible, before we could silence it and resume the university operations and clinic activities back to normal. When the alarm gets activated, university personnel and/or security will investigate the cause of the alarm and will either contact the emergency services in case of a genuine activation or will silence the alarm and will provide ‘All clear’ instruction to those gathered in the assembly point. 2. If you should discover a fire, operate the nearest callpoint, which is a red and black box on the wall that says ’press to activate the fire alarm’, and leave the building immediately by the nearest exit. DO NOT attempt to tackle the fire, unless you are trained and it is safe to do so. 3. Should the fire alarm sound, leave the building immediately by the nearest exit. Do not stop to gather personal items, but please make sure to close all doors behind you. The white-and-green running figure signs will guide you to the nearest stairwell and exit door. 4. Once outside, assemble in car park 1 (in front of the sports hall). Remain in the car park and refrain from wandering off until a member of the university administration/security will liaise with you and advise you when it is safe to enter the building. 5. The fire alarm system is very sophisticated and will detect the cause of the alarm (smoke, heat, alarm call-point, etc) and its location. To this end, it is very important to avoid false activation of the system. In practice, this means a strict no-smoking policy operates within the university .
NO SMOKING POLICY
From 1st July 2007 the new non-smoking legislation came into force which makes it illegal to smoke in any of the university’s buildings. All staff, students, patients of the clinic and visitors are required not to smoke in the buildings (including the student bar) and grounds of the university. The only exception is the smoking zone in a space set up in the front car park. For those that smoke you are requested to only use that area.
