The vineyards are incredibly steep, so everything has to be done by hand. It's extreme winemaking, but it is worth it to make fizz this good. Fresh, floral, fruity. It has a soft, creamy mousse, with full flavours of ripe peach, apple and citrus. It's not bone dry, so it's a great choise as an aperitif. .11% Average Score 3.5
Falanghina del Sannio DOP 2023 La Guardiense Regione: Campania Source: Majestic wine Characteristics: Founded in 1960 by 33 growers, La Guardiense, from Guardia Sanfromonte, is one of Campania's most important cooperatives. It has grown to 1000 growers covering 2000 hectares in Sannio, a hilly area north of Naples. Riccardo Cotarella, president of the International union of oenologists, crafts this wine from Falanghina grapes – an ancient Italian variety – and showcases exactly why it's quickly gaining popularity around the world. The dry white wine he produced was the first recorded in the region. Bordering the coastal region of Liguria, the Cortese grapes are cooled by sea breezes and develop mouth-watering flavours. Gavi is often called the “Chablis of Italy”, and we can see why. Crisp, fresh, citrusy, it's deliciously refreshing and aromatic, with hints of white peach and honey. Barolo DOCG 2020 Terre del Barolo Regione: Piemonte Source: Waitrose Characteristics: Named “The King of wines”, this famous wine of Piemonte, made from the noble Nebbiolo grapes, it is aged in oak casks (botti di rovere) for at least 18 months. It has a garnet-red colour with orangey nouances and a complexaroma of wild berries, raspberries and violets. The oak ageing gives it notes of tobacco and wood with a smooth and spicey finish and pronounced tannins. Brunello di Montalcino Val di Suga DOCG 2019 Regione: Toscana Source: Waitrose Characteristics: With a beautiful name and a reputation that goes with it, this full- bodied red from Montalcino, Tuscany, is made from Sangiovese grapes. It has rich notes of cherry, violet and tart orange that open up to more complex ones of blueberry, vanilla, cinnamon and mint chocolate. Ruby red, in classic Brunello style, it has elegant tannins and a lovely long finish. Ideal with game, roast and grilled meats and mature cheeses. 14% Average Score 4.5
