White Wines
Orvieto DOC 2022Regione: Umbria Source: Coop Characteristics: From the vineyards in the Classico area around Orvieto in Southern Umbria, it's the region's best known white wine. Made from a blend of Grechetto and trebbiano grapes, it has a bouquet of white flowers, clean and crisp on the palate, and retains refreshing fruit acidity while displaying slightly nutty characters. 12.5% Average score (1-5) 3
Verdeca IGT 2022 Paolo LeoRegione: Puglia Source: Sainsbury's Discovery Collection Characteristics: Part of a range that imports wines made from little known grape varieties like this rare, floral-scented Verdeca. Grown on established vines and, after fermentation, the grapes are left to spend time ageing on its yeast lees to add delicious complexity. The wine has hints of green (hence the name), on the nose there are hints of white flowers, while on the palate it brims with notes of peach and citrus. The finish is lingering with herbal undertones and crisp acidity. 12.5% Average score 4
Forza della Natura IGP 2022 Terre Siciliane Orange Catarratto 13%Regione: Sicilia Source: Waitrose Characteristics: Made from organic Catarratto grapes, with no added sulphites, hand harvested and with a small portion fermented on the grape skins. This brings additional flavours and gives the wine a pale orange hue, resulting in a lively and bright wine with melon, peach and nectarine flavours. Unfiltered, it may be hazy. Average Score 3.8
Red Wines
BardolinoDOC 2022 Fratelli RecchiaRegione: Veneto Source: Waitrose Characteristics: This lively and charming wine, produced by Fratelli Recchia in Negrar di Valpollicella near Verona, has a distinctive lightness, making it very versatile (and drinkable). From the wonderful area around Bardolino, on the shores of Lago di Garda, this refreshing but tasty red can also be served lightly chilled and goes with almost anything. 12.5% Average score 4
Nero di TroiaIGT Castellore 2020 Regione: Puglia Source: Aldi Characteristics: Made from a legendary local grape, the Nero di Troia is vibrant fruity and medium bodied, with intense ruby colour. On the nose, it has blackberry and plum with spiced and earthy notes. On the palate it is well balanced with cherry and dark berry flavours, soft tannins and a spicy finish. 13.5% Average score 4
Memŏro Rosso d'Italia Piccini Regione: Toscana Source: Sainsbury's Characteristics: Created by Piccini in Castellina in Chianti to celebrate the wines of Italy, was named Memŏro Italia, I remember Italy. It has intense flavours of ripe plums, sweet spices and aromas of rich fruit cake. Made from slightly dried grapes to increase the flavour complexity, it has silky tannins leading to a long and generous finish. Drink it with richly flavoured food and strong cheeses. 13.5% Average score 4.5
